There are many different types of barista courses you can enrol in, and they all have different goals in mind. From coffee appreciation courses to complete master barista training, there’s something for everybody. But you need to understand the course types, what you gain from them, and the cost in order to choose the right one for you. Here are some of the popular barista courses on offer.

Barista and Coffee Art Courses

Barista coffee courses are a great way to learn the basic skills you need for any job where making coffee is a priority. Skills you’ll learn include tamping coffee,  milk texturing, using coffee machines to create the perfect espresso, cleaning and maintenance as well as how to pour different coffees from a menu.

This barista training costs $195 for a 1-day training session, and there are no prerequisites to join except being over the age of 16.

Barista Master Classes

Whether you’ve got some basic barista skills you’d like to expand on or just want to start from scratch and be the best barista you can, master classes are your best option. You’ll learn all of the basics that you would in a standard barista course, as well as specialised milk texturing techniques, latte art, food safety practices, and plenty of coffee industry theory that helps you provide beverage recommendations based on customer preferences.

These courses run for 2 days with plenty of hands-on training opportunities to perfect your skills. Barista master classes cost $295 per person. As this course is accredited, learners receive a Statement of Attainment for the following hospitality training units:

  •       SITHFAB025 - Prepare and serve espresso coffee
  •       SITXFSA005 - Use hygienic practices for food safety

Latte Art and Coffee Appreciation

Not everybody wants to be a professional barista, but plenty of folks out there love their coffee. If you want to learn some coffee skills and knowledge simply for your own benefit or to enhance your career, you can choose from a variety of specialised courses. Some of these include latte art and coffee appreciation courses.

You might also consider additional courses relevant to the hospitality industry, such as Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), bartending, food handling and more. These courses have different costs, and the Coffee School team will be happy to give you more information if a particular course appeals to you.

Certification and Accreditation

Many barista training courses are nationally accredited, offering students a Statement of Attainment that can be used for other hospitality training courses. Others are non-accredited, but this shouldn’t deter you. The reality is that a resume with specialist coffee courses on it shows employers that you’re serious about your profession and enhances your employability.

Budgeting Tips for Barista Training

With varying course prices, you’ll need to prepare carefully before booking your training. If you’re already employed in a barista or hospitality role, some employers may be willing to fully or partially subsidise your training, so it’s worth checking this first.

Aside from that, it’s simply a matter of finding the best value for money when choosing a course. When you consider the employment and career potential, the barista training cost is small compared to what you can make in the long run. If you need to set some funds away over a period of time to save for your course, it will always be a valuable investment.
