From tampers to milk jugs, the right tools can make all the difference. If you're joining a barista course in Sydney or Melbourne, here’s a quick intro to the tools you'll be using every day.
In short
- What are the essential tools for baristas?
Espresso machines, grinders, tampers, milk jugs, knock boxes and cleaning gear. - Will I use these in a barista course?
Yes – all our courses include hands-on use of commercial equipment. - Do I need my own tools before starting?
Nope! We provide everything during training.
1. Espresso Machine
This is your main tool, and every barista needs to know how to operate one confidently. You'll learn:
- How to extract shots consistently
- How to clean and maintain the machine
- How to troubleshoot common issues
Our barista courses offer hands-on practice with commercial espresso machines used in real cafes.
2. Coffee Grinder
Dialling in your grinder means adjusting the grind size to suit your beans and espresso machine. In training, you’ll learn to:
- Use doser and doserless grinders
- Adjust the grind for changing conditions
- Keep it clean and calibrated
3. Tamper
A tamper is used to press ground coffee evenly into the portafilter. It’s a small tool but crucial for consistency.
Tip: You’ll learn proper tamping pressure and how it affects your espresso during your course.
4. Milk Jugs
These stainless steel jugs are for steaming and pouring milk. You’ll use different sizes depending on the drink type, and learn how to:
- Aerate and spin milk correctly
- Pour latte art with control
- Steam both dairy and plant-based milks
5. Knock Box
Used to dispose of used coffee grounds quickly and cleanly. Every cafe has one – and you’ll get used to the rhythm of knocking out shots efficiently.
6. Cleaning Tools
A good barista keeps their station clean. You’ll get familiar with tools like:
- Group head brushes
- Cleaning powder for backflushing
- Cloths for milk and machine wiping
Keeping your equipment clean is just as important as making a great coffee.
